Coimbatore: With monsoon playing hide and seek, residents of a nearby village today solemnised a "marriage" between a pipal and a neem tree, representing Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi, to invoke the rain god.
The villagers in Kurumbapalayam, about 30 KM from here, performed the "marriage" in the traditional style to the trees situated on the premises of Goddess Makali temple, sources in the temple said.
The trees were decorated with traditional attires like silk dhoti and saree.
Meanwhile, a 'Varuna Japam' was organised at the Kalyana Bhajana Venkataramana Swami temple here yesterday with the priests offering prayers from plastic containers filled with water. Normally, the japam is performed with the priests standing in neck-deep water in the temple tank, but as it was not cleaned, they chose the containers, temple sources said.
