Welcoming the apex court order quashing the expulsion of former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh from the state  assembly, Congress today flayed the ruling SAD-BJP alliance for allegedly "misusing" the majority in the assembly to its political advantage.

The Akalis said they would take legal opinion on the issue.

"We respect the judiciary. We will examine the legal opinion after studying the judgement in detail," a SAD spokesman said.

While, Congress today demanded the resignation of chief minster Prakash Singh Badal noting that he was "reprimanded" by the apex court in its verdict.

The ruling is expected to give a shot in arm to the former chief minister for his possible elevation to the post of president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), party sources said.

"The judgement by the Supreme Court had nullified all the acts of Punjab Vidhan Sabha against Amarinder and it is a slap on the face of SAD-BJP combine," Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira said.

Hailing the verdict, Khaira said that the Supreme Court had rectified the "bad precedent" set up by the Akalis by expelling Amarinder from the Vidhan Sabha.

With Congress apparently divided between Amarinder and Bhattal (Congress Legislature Party leader Rajinder Kaur) group in the state, party insiders are of the opinion that the judgement will give a boost to the party.

"The judgement will demoralise the rank and file of Akalis," Khaira said while referring to alleged onslaught launched against Amarinder by the Badal regime after it assumed power in the state.

The Congress in Punjab will launch a state-wide agitation against the "misrule" of SAD-BJP combine, he said.

Meanwhile, Harish Rai Dhanda, an Akali legislator, who was chairman of the Privilege Committee set up to probe into allegations against Amarinder, said the verdict of the Supreme Court related to "a constitutional matter (unseating from the house)."

"The Supreme Court had not set aside the report (irregularities in allotment of land) submitted by me against Amarinder in the asembly on the basis of which he was xpelled from the House."

A Constitution bench of the Supreme Court today quashed Amarinder Singh's expulsion from the state Assembly for his alleged involvement in the Amritsar land allotment scam.

The court also restored the seat of Singh which was declared vacant by the Assembly consequent to his expulsion.
