Just two days old in the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s chair, Akhilesh Yadav has started overturning his predecessor Mayawati’s decisions in a big way.

Among his first decisions, he has cut down the Dalit leader’s elaborate security. Over 400 police personnel posted for Mayawati’s security at her home and office have now been removed. She would now get Z-plus security like any other former CM.

The number of cars in her cavalcade has been almost halved, and security from her Delhi residence removed completely.
The government has, in fact, decided to review all the decisions taken by the Mayawati regime over the past two months.

One of the Dalit icon’s last decisions, taken on the day the results came in, was to provide a driver and a peon to all retired chief secretaries and cabinet secretaries.

The move was solely aimed to benefit Mayawati’s Man Friday ex-cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh. The decision has already been challenged in court, but sources say it might be struck down even before the petition is heard.

The new government is also expected to take a decision soon on the Lokayukta’s report recommending a CBI inquiry against Naseemuddin Siddiqui, the senior-most minister in Mayawati’s cabinet.

Earlier, Mayawati had returned the report challenging the Lokayukta’s authority to look into the matter, and summarily refusing to take any action based on his report. Siddiqui faces serious charges related to corruption and amassing disproportionate assets.

Interestingly, UP Lokayukta NK Mehrotra, who was to retire on March 15, has been given a two-year extension.

The Samajwadi Party government has passed orders to freeze all recruitment exercises initiated by the previous government. All top bureaucrats who ruled the roost during Mayawati’s regime have been stripped of their posts and kept in waiting.

All political appointments made for the posts of chairmen in various boards, corporations and commissions have also been cancelled with immediate effect.

The State Advisory Council, a powerful body constituted under BSP MP and Mayawati’s legal eagle Satish Chandra Mishra, has been dissolved by the new government.

In a major shift, powers of the chief secretary have been restored completely. In the previous regime, the chief secretary was overshadowed by the cabinet secretary, a post which has now been done away with. Akhilesh has also promised to establish an enquiry commission to get all charges of corruption against the previous government investigated.
