The initiative was designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.

It was founded by US senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in held on April 22, 1970.

The day is now celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.
Earlier limited only to the US, it started being celebrated globally in 1990. Several activities are held world wide, globally coordinated by the Earth Day Network.

The official website of the initiative www.earthday.org lists climate change, conservation and biodiversity, energy, food and agriculture among the core issues.

The EDN claims that more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world.

EDN's campaigns to celebrate Earth Day this year includes athletes for the Earth Campaign that brings Olympic, professional, and every day athletes' voices to help promote a solution to climate change.

There is also the Billion Acts of Green Campaign which will aggregate the millions of environmental service commitments that individuals and organisations around the world make each year.
Another initiative is Artist for the Earth, a campaign that involves hundreds of arts institutions and artists worldwide to create environmental awareness.
