Most Amdavadis would be surprised to learn that the area near the Vasna barrage is going to be one of the best places for recreation in western Ahmedabad.

But all this will change as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to develop the area around the barrage as a special recreation zone.
Sources in the AMC said that besides the 25.2-metre-high rotating tower that is to be built on the barrage premises, a garden spread over 18,000 square metres near the river would also be laid. It would be the city’s biggest garden, the sources said.
Once the tower and the garden are ready, visitors would not only be able to see one of the finest engineering marvels in the country, they would also be able to go boating on the river.
They would also have the option of dining in a floating restaurant and relaxing in a beautifully landscaped garden.
The AMC standing committee on Thursday approved the decision to build the rotating tower on the Vasna barrage campus, precisely where the Sabarmati riverfront project ends.
Chairman of the standing committee Asit Vora said they wanted to erect the tower at a place where there was huge open space, so that it could be seen from afar.
He said that, initially, they were planning to build the tower near the Subhash bridge, but as the place is close to the airport, they chose another site.
“Besides the tower and the garden at the Vasna barrage, the AMC also plans to start a floating restaurant and a boating service as part of the Sabarmati riverfront project,” Vora said.
“The water body near the tower would also add to its beauty.” The 25.2 metre-high tower would have six stainless steel blocks, each of which will rotate differently, giving the structure a new look every few hours.
