Chaitree Ekadashi, April 14, has turned out to be a confluence of various religious festivities in the city. Vaishnav Sampraday temples known as havelis are going to organise various programmes to mark the celebration of Kamada Ekadashi on that day.

Kamada Ekadashi is observed during the waxing of Moon which usually happens in the month of April. It is believed that observing Kamada Ekadashi helps one get free of any sins and become more virtuous. The significance of Ekadashi fasting finds a mention in the Varaha Purana and was narrated to Yudhisthira by Lord Krishna.

Shashtapeethadishwar Goswami Dwarkeshlalji Maharajshree's Kalyan Pushti Haveli in city's Vastrapur area has hosted a two and half hour bhajan-kirtan programme at the haveli to mark the celebration of the occasion. The manager of the haveli, Naresh Kansara said, "More than 50 members would gather to participate in the haveli's Ekadashi bhajan kirtan session between 2 to 5pm."

The story behind the festival says that a gandharva (messenger between God and humans) was unable to perform his duties rightly as he was overpowered by lust. As he failed in his duties, he was cursed to become a cannibal by a king. Due to the curse, the gandharva and his wife had to take shelter in the forests. One day the wife came across a sage, who advised the duo of keeping the Kamada Ekadashi fast to get rid of the curse. The gandharva couple observed the Kamada Ekadashi fast and the husband was freed from the curse. On the Ekadashi day, most Vishnu devotees observe a complete or a partial fast.

Goswami Vrajeshkumar Maharajshree's Vrajdham Haveli at Anandnagar area has organised a special exclusive flower decoration darshan named 'Ful Mandali Darshan' and a lecture on Shodhash Granth at 5.30pm. "The preparations for the special flower decoration have already begun," informed Mayur Parekh, co-ordinator at the haveli.
