The Uttar Pradesh government today demanded the Centre sanction a financial assistance of Rs10 lakh each to kin of children, who died after vaccination in Mohanlalganj last week.

"Though CM Mayawati has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs50,000 each, considering all aspects of the incident but in the interest of the vaccination drive it is necessary that financial assistance should be provided by the Centre," state health minister Anant Mishra said in a letter send to Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

He also demanded that special emphasis should be laid on the quality of the vaccines being supplied for vaccination.

"Prima facie it seems that there was some problem with the vaccine which led to the incident," Mishra said while referring to death of children on August 21.

He said the Food and Drug Authority had already sent samples of vaccine used to Central Drug Laboratory in HP for testing.

"The test report on quality of vaccine should be provided at the earliest so that G K Mallik committee constituted by the state to probe the incident can reach to the conclusion," he said.

The minister said the Centre supplied measles, BCG vaccines, syringes and vitamin A syrup to the states.

"Mallik committee is of the view that for a threadbare probe quality testing of vaccines, syringe and syrup was also needed," he said.

Mishra said the CM had taken the death of four more children seriously and had directed release of Rs 50,000 from her fund, suspension of staff concerned, to lodge FIR and constituted an inquiry committee.

He said the inquiry committee has so far found that four teams with similar cold chain of vaccine were sent to Mohanlalganj.

"These teams vaccinated 215 children and no problem was faced by three teams. Unfortunately, four children died after being vaccinated by the fourth team," the minister said.

He said on August 21 more than two lakh children were vaccinated in 20,000 villages in the state.
