Akali Dal’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal made a Zero Hour intervention about the killing of six Sikhs in a gurudwara in the US and Congress president Sonia Gandhi did not want the Congress voice to go unheard on a sensitive and important issue like this one. She signalled to the party man from Punjab, Pratap Singh, and sent a note as well.

Singh promptly raised his hand but the presiding officer asked him to wait as Kaur was finishing her statement.

“The last 10 years have seen thousands of Sikhs being murdered, assaulted, abused physically and verbally because of their attire and their resemblance to a terrorist with which they have no links. How much longer will it take for innocent and peace-loving Sikhs to give up their lives or live in terror before the Indian government wakes up to take some corrective steps to stop these senseless killings? It is time for the government to stand up,” she said.

Then the presiding officer gave leader of opposition Sushma Swaraj the opportunity to speak. She said she and her party, the BJP, agreed with Kaur’s statement and urged the government to make a statement and state the facts. Pratap Singh chose to speak in Punjabi and praised the government’s handling of the issue.

Heated exchanges between opposition and Congress members ensued and Akali Dal members stormed the well of the house. This prompted M Thambidurai, who was in the chair, to adjourn the house for over an hour.

JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav said the killing of Sikhs in the US gurdwara was a matter of concern for the whole country.

Parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Bansal concurred with Yadav and said prime minister had spoken to US president Barack Obama who conveyed his condolences.
