NEW DELHI: The backwardness among the depressed classes is a "genetic accident beyond their control". And corruption in India can be blamed on the "upper caste" people who have ruled India since independence.

These are the arguments put forward by former union law minister Ram Jethmalani, while appearing in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Rashtriya Janata Dal on Tuesday.

The Lalu Prasad-led RJD, which is part of the UPA government has intervened in a case seeking a revocation of the quota law reserving 27 percent quotas for OBCs in institutions of higher learning. Jethmalani defended the controversial reservation policy saying the affirmative action amounted to "applying balm to the old wounds of the depressed sections of the Indian society".
