Upgradation of Delhi airport main runway to be over by September

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation had inspected the runway on February 19 to assess its condition and concluded that it needs major repairs.

The upgradation and recarpeting work of the main runway of the IGI airport will take six months and be over by September this year before the Commonwealth Games.
    
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has submitted a proposal for reconstruction of the main runway (28/10). It would remain closed for about six months. As per the plan, the work would be completed by September 20, civil aviation minister Praful Patel said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today.
    
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation had inspected the runway on February 19 to assess its condition and concluded that it needs major repairs.
    
Also, DIAL in its assessment through experts had concluded that the sub-layer of the runway also needs repairs.
    
Depending upon the traffic load, a runway needs resurfacing every six to eight years. Last time re-carpeting of runway was done by Airports Authority of India in 1999-2000.
