A day after Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati slammed prohibitory orders on Congress party’s protest demonstrations in Lucknow, senior party leaders led by general secretary Digvijay Singh called on prime minister Manmohan Singh to seek his intervention into the “misrule” in the state.

“If a proper investigation is conducted, then surely the trail of corruption will lead to the office of the chief minister,” said Singh while speaking to mediapersons after the meeting. He said the death of three chief medical officers in the same office within a span of eight months points to something sinister.

“The chief minister has removed two ministers for their supposed involvement in wrong doing, but no one knows what criminal action has been against them and what was the exact nature of the wrongdoing,” he added.

Digvijay who had traveled to Sonebhadra on Monday and alleged that the Mayawati government is ‘neck-deep in corruption’ also revealed details of the local officers involved in a Rs300 crore scam.

“The principal secretary home had promised at Sonebhadra that action would be taken against these officers, but then nothing happened and instead an RTI activist who had unearthed the scam was shot at,” charged the senior leader. However, he was candid enough to admit that the central government could not unilaterally order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in to the Lucknow murders under the present scheme of constitutional things.” For this purpose we have to wage a battle in the courts and on the streets,” he added.

UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, leader of party’s legislative wing Pramod Tiwari and others were a part of the delegation that met the prime minister.

However, the party’s high profile general secretary Rahul Gandhi who is generally on the forefront on matters related to Uttar Pradesh was conspicuous by his absence.
