UNLF militant arrested in Manipur

A United National Liberation Front militant was arrested and a five kg bomb recovered from his possession at Nambol in Manipur's Bishenpur district, police said today.
 
Commandos attached to the district police and personnel of the 4/8 Gorkha Rifles arrested the insurgent Oinam Anand yesterday.
 
Anand, 22, is attached to the Manipur People's Army, armed wing of the UNLF, which along with some insurgent organisations has called for a general strike and boycott of the Independence Day celebrations tomorrow.
 
Anand, who was later produced before the local media at the office of the superintendent of police, Bishenpur district, said he was assigned to explode the bomb before the Independence Day celebrations somewhere near Nambol.
 
Official sources said security measures have been tightened in the state in view of the boycott call by the UNLF, Manipur People's Liberation Front and other insurgent organisations.
 
These organisations have been boycotting Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations in the state for a number of years.
