An undertrial suffering from schizophrenia and admitted at the Mansik Arogya Hospital, committed suicide by hanging himself in a bathroom of the hospital early on Wednesday morning. The deceased was on trial in a case filed by his wife under sections 498c, 504 and 323 of the IPC.
According to sources at Mansik Arogya Hospital, Nitin Chawda (37) was brought to the hospital 10 days back from the civil hospital. He was under observation for a report on his mental condition that had been sought by the court. On Tuesday, Chawda slept in the lobby. Next morning, when he spent more time than usual in the bathroom, hospital staff checked the bathroom and found him hanging from a water pipe.
"Chawda had been suffering from schizophrenia for the last 12 years," said Girish Trivedi, senior counsellor working with the hospital. "Earlier, he was admitted at the civil hospital but the authorities there sent him to us, out of fear that he might damage hospital property or get out of control. He was under observation and we had to file a report on Thursday in the court."
Chawda had married one Neeta in 1998 against the wishes of their families. They were neighbours but, after marriage, began living on their own in Anand. They have a 10-year-old son. "Initially, our family did not agree to the marriage but, subsequently, we accepted it," said Jayesh Chawda, Nitin younger brother. "Nitin had a brokerage business and was well-settled but he developed some mental problems. There were no major issues between the couple."
Nitin's wife Neeta had registered a case against him with the Mahila police station in Anand a year back. Following the complaint, he was arrested and lodged in Nadiad jail. There it was revealed that his mental condition was not normal. A few months back, he was shifted to Ahmedabad's civil hospital. When it became difficult for the civil hospital to handle him, he was sent to the Mansik Arogya Hospital, where he ended his life.
