The chairman of the Moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq has asked Saudi Arabia to play a "positive role" in bringing India and Pakistan closer for resolution of the Kashmir issue.

"Saudi Arabia which has friendly relations with both India and Pakistan should play a positive role in bringing the two countries closer to pave way for resolution of Kashmir issue," Mirwaiz was quoted as saying in Jeddah in a statement here.

Lauding the role of those lending support for resolution of Kashmir issue, Mirwaiz said Kashmir is the basic issue and the bone of contention between India and Pakistan.

"Saudi Arabia is playing a great role in addressing the problems faced by the Muslims around the globe particularly in Afghanistan and Palestine and we would like it to extend its reach to India and Pakistan to bring them closer so that the
Kashmir issue could be resolved," he said.

He also asked OIC, which is headquartered at Jeddah, to send a goodwill team to Kashmir to access the situation there.
