Uma Bharti’s return to BJP seems unlikely

The state unit in Madhya Pradesh is quite settled without the mercurial sadhvi, say senior leaders.

Even as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s top leadership re-inducted former union minister Jaswant Singh into the party, there seems to be no indication that another high profile leader, Uma Bharti, is on her way back.

“There is simply no consensus on her return. The Madhya Pradesh unit remains strongly opposed to her comeback,” a senior vice-president told DNA.

He pointed out that Jaswant Singh stood on a different footing altogether. “The manner in which he was sacked from the party was indecent and disgraceful to say the least.” Jaswant Singh was summarily removed from the party for his laudatory references to Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in a book authored by him.

Jaswant Singh’s return to the party had become a foregone conclusion when he traveled with senior leader Lal Krishna Advani in a private aircraft to attend the former vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s funeral. Later, Uma Bharati also made a similar flying trip with Advani to attend Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh’s father’s 13th day rites. This spurred speculation that the saffron sadhvi was also on her way back home.

But there were a few discordant voices against Singh’s re-induction. On the other hand, BJP president Nitin Gadkari who succeeded Rajnath Singh had made up his mind quite early that this ‘wrong should be rectified.’ In Bharti’s case, the same level of firmness is not evident among the top leaders.

“Our MP unit is doing well and we see no logic in disturbing this settled equation by bringing her back. Her mercurial nature is well-known and no one can be  sure about her tantrums,” said a senior leader.
