The autopsy on the body of British fugitive Ajay Kaushal, who died in a Goa jail, would be conducted only on Friday after his sister's arrival from UK, police said today.

A senior police officer said that the postmortem on the body of the fugitive, who died in the judicial custody on Monday night, could not be conducted in absence of his relatives.

"We have informed the UK authorities, who on the other hand has conveyed the message to Kaushal's relatives. His sister will be arriving in India on Friday," police said.

Kaushal, wanted by the Lancashire constabulary, was arrested in Goa last year, accidently, after his friend, another UK citizen, died due to drug overdose in South Goa.

The fugitive was wanted back in Britain for his involvement in kidnapping a businessman in 2003 and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in 2005 by a local court. He had jumped bail and since then was on the run.

Judicial magistrate first class, Margao had remanded him into judicial custody on October 28, 2009 and he was lodged in sub jail at Sada, a locality near port town of Vasco.

Jail authorities on Tuesday said that the accused, a diabetic, was undertaking treatment.

"He was suffering from low blood pressure and his health deteriorated late in the night forcing us to take him to the hospital," RK Satardekar, jail superintendent, said.

The jail authorities, who have commissioned inquiry after registering a case of custodial death, are now waiting for the postmortem report to proceed.

Jail sources said that Kaushal, a burly man, had to be handled by around 10 policemen as he used to get violent.

Vasco police had booked a case against him after he punched a jailor on his nose in a fit of rage.

"He had also assaulted a police sub inspector and tried to attack a journalist when he was arrested," a jail official added.
