Three people were killed and 16 injured after security forces opened fire on protesters who defied curfew in Kashmir. The three deaths have taken the toll to 97 since the June 11 unrest.

Police said miscreants resorted to heavy stone-pelting on security personnel at Churpora village of Beerwah in Budgam district. Security personnel were forced to use tear gas shells and lathi charge in retaliation.

“Four people were injured in retaliatory action. Fayaz Ahmad Dar of Surpura, who succumbed, was one of the four. In a stone-pelting incident at Chachloora Beerwah, Mohammad Shafi Ganai was injured during retaliatory action by security forces,” a police spokesman said.

Stone-pelting incidents were also reported at Tapper Pattan in Baramulla district. “Five persons were injured in retaliatory action. One of the injured, Ghulam Rasool Bhat of Tappar Pattan, later succumbed,” he said, adding, another youth was killed when security forces opened fire at a mob at Shrimal in Shopian district.
Stone-pelting incidents were also reported from other places after the Friday prayers.

Miscreants also set ablaze two Forest Protection Force huts at Shirmal in Shopian and a shop at Singpora in Baramulla that was owned by a policeman’s family, police said.

The army had deployed troops at various places to secure their camps after separatists had submitted “a memorandum to the armed forces to leave Kashmir on September 21”. Hurriyat hawks had proposed a march to army camps. “Hurriyat has asked people to step up violence by staging sit-ins outside army camps and preventing movement of convoys on September 21. This is a deliberate effort to embroil the army in the agitation and distract it from its work,” defence spokesman at Srinagar lieutenant colonel JS Brar said.
