Two out of the four serving IPS officers summoned by the CBI in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, presented themselves before the probe agency on Monday. Two former IPS officers have also been summoned.

The two officers — DySP GL Singhal and DIG Rajneesh Rai — appeared before the investigating agency at the CBI office in Old Sachivalaya, Gandhinagar, on Monday. Four other IPS officers are to appear before the CBI by May 7, 2010.

Singhal and Rai reached the CBI office separately at around 12 noon but Rai was allowed to leave after only 20 minutes. Singhal, however, was not allowed to go till late in the afternoon.  Sources said Rai, who was earlier the investigating officer of the case, had deposited some important papers related to the investigation. He then spent some 20 minutes at the CBI office.

DIG, CBI, Kandaswamy later told reporters that Rai had handed over to the agency some important papers related to the case. He will be called again to record his statement once the questioning of all the other IPS officers was over, Kandaswamy added.

He further said that Rai will be questioned with regard to his investigation of the fake encounter and about suspected involvement of any police officer in the case.

Singhal, on the other hand, was questioned by the CBI for several hours. He was the district superintendent of police, Gandhinagar, when Sohrabuddin was killed in a fake encounter.

Sohrabuddin and his wife, Kausarbi, were allegedly kept at the Disha farmhouse in Sabarmati locality which falls within the jurisdiction of the Gandhinagar DSP. Sources said Singhal is alleged to have threatened the owner of the farmhouse and forced him to allow DG Vanzara and the other accused in the case to keep Sohrabuddin and Kausarbi there in illegal captivity.

Singhal is also accused of tampering with evidence
after Sohrabuddin was killed and Kausarbi went missing. Sources said that he had allegedly tampered with evidence at the Disha farmhouse and other vital evidence which could have helped nail the accused.

Apart from Rajkot police commissioner Geetha Johri, no other IPS officer has informed the CBI about when they intend to present themselves before the probe agency. But they have time till May 7 to respond to the CBI summons.
