Two dozen new, modified PG courses from 2010-11

With the implementation of CBCS, state varsities will introduce a few foundation courses from this year.

Hold your breath! The next academic session 2010-11 has a bouquet full of modified and new courses in the varsities across the state. There will be a range of changes in the approach that education will be provided in the campuses to the thousands of post-graduate students.

Some of the changes will be implementation of semester system and also the choice based credit system (CBCS). However, with the implementation of these two, there will be a whole new set of modified courses apart from what varsities offer normally.

These courses will be -- physical fitness and wellness, health and fitness management, yoga science, sports tourism, recreation and leisure time management, sports psychology, personality development programme (PDP) and life skills, health education, management in physical education and sports.

Further, universities will have choices to introduce subjects such as general English, communication skills, critical thinking and writing skills, elementary calculus and differential equations, introduction to logic, learning from the great Indian thinkers, learning from world leaders, mathematical basics and quantitative skills, elementary statistics and data analysis, basic computer applications, soft skills development, interpersonal communication skills in workplaces, communication skills development, operation of common gadgets among others.

For this purpose the commissioner of higher education department has tied up with Indira Gandhi National Open University which will be providing study materials and also helping faculties to get trained. The department recently conducted a workshop at Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration (SPIPA).

"In this workshop the representatives of universities across the state had gathered and four task forces were set up which include career design and development, material production, exams reforms and teacher's training," said a source.

He added that each task force includes one expert from IGNOU, gold medalists of last two years from various varsities, one expert from universities and one academician.

"Gujarat is the only state which has sought help from IGNOU. We will be guiding them to prepare study material. We have more than 2000 study materials which cover almost every new or modern subject and these materials are highly acclaimed," said BS Saraswat, from IGNOU who was in the city recently.
