Two persons died and another fell ill after drinking spurious liquor in Orissa's Cuttack district, about 55 km from here, the police said today.

"Around 20 people from Nanpur village in Salipur had drunk liquor bought from Bijay Kandi during a yatra show on Saturday night," Inspector-in-Charge of Salipur police station, Arjun Barik said.

Ramachandra Kandi and Rama Tarei died during treatment yesterday and Santosh Kandi was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack where his condition was stated to be stable, the police said.

Ramachandra and Santosh are sons of the liquor vendor.

An investigation was on to ascertain whether they died due to excessive drinking or spurious liquor as the other villagers who had drank liquor from the same vendor did not show any symptom of illness, Barik said.

Kandi had been detained to get information about the source from where he had got the sealed foreign liquor bottles, he said.
