Negligence didn’t end with the tragic death of 20 inmates at Beggars’ Colony. A man who lost consciousness was  dumped into a hearse van along with the dead on  Thursday. He tired himself, screaming out aloud, and was later discovered and rescued.

One volunteer present at the site said,“The van was parked here for over an hour. We stood here for a while, thinking the van was empty. We suddenly heard a voice from inside. There was obviously someone inside who did not belong in a hearse.”

Officials initially denied that any such incident happened. Later, forced by the crowd to open the door of the van, a living man was found among the dead, gesturing for water as he was unable to talk, tired out by the screaming.

“We have been observing the treatment bestowed on the people here. Everyone, from doctors and nurses to the staff at the colony have been brutally careless,” said Roopa, a resident of Chamrajpet who had come to the site in search of her missing father.

Angry volunteers demanded an explanation of the officials present, but the men they accosted said that they too were mere volunteers, present at the site only to lend a helping hand.
The lone living man recovered from the hearse which was ferrying the bodies was later rushed to a hospital in an ambulance.
