Coming out against the Centre for hiking the price of petrol without consulting her, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said her party workers would hold block-wise protests in West Bengal against the move.

"Maybe, we are part of an ally which is in power at the Centre. But we did not know (about the price icrease)," she told newsmen in Kolkata.

Banerjee said Trinamool Congress workers would hold protest rallies at every block in the state tomorrow against the price rise.

Stating that the common man was put in difficulty by rising prices, she said, "We are always with the people. That is why, I have not increased railway fares."

Earlier, Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandopadhyay said that although the Trinamool Congress chief had met Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee at the Kolkata airport, the decision on increasing the petrol prices were not communicated to her.

Leader of the opposition in the asssembly Partha Chatterjee urged the Centre to roll back the prices and control the prices of essentials.
