The ministry of tribal affairs wants a mandatory role in the clearance of development projects involving displacement of tribals, Lok Sabha was informed today.

"On November 25, 2010, the tribal affairs minister has written to the prime minister to issue suitable instructions for obtaining clearance of the rehabilitation and resettlement plan from the ministry for all the development projects, if it involves displacement of tribal population," minister of state for tribal affairs Tushar A Chaudhary stated in written reply to a question.

He was asked whether the tribal affairs ministry has asked for a mandatory role in clearance of projects affecting tribals.

Chaudhary, however, said that ministry has not yet received the response from the prime minister in this regard.

The minister informed the Lower House that the tribal affairs ministry, as per the direction of the planning commission, deals with the clearance of rehabilitation and resettlement plans of irrigation and flood control projects where displacement of scheduled tribes population is involved.
