Almost a month after the gang rape of a 23-year-old woman, the Delhi court is yet to begin the trial in the case. Metropolitan magistrate Namrita Aggarwal fixed January 14 for scrutiny of documents filed with the charge sheet in the case.

The five accused — bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Thakur were produced before the court.

Meanwhile, the court issued notice to the Delhi Police to file its response on an allegation by an advocate that the police and the Safdarjung Hospital were ‘negligent’ in dealing with the case and the victims. Advocate ML Sharma, the lawyer of Mukesh Singh, also alleged that Ram Singh, the brother of the bus driver, who police say was the leader of the gang, had said that Mukesh was illegally tortured in police custody.

On the other hand, during a two-hour meeting with his lawyer, Ram Singh said he was innocent.
