Don't follow Gandhiji as your guru, but treat him like a friend who stops you from going astray, said the Mahatma's grandson, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, on Monday.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the 57th convocation of Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Ahmedabad. Incidentally, the Vidyapeeth also turned 90 on October 18.

The former governor of West Bengal urged graduating students to consider Mahatma Gandhi and his legacy from a different perspective. “We need to make his values part of our actions,” he said.

“When you return to society after having lived by Gandhian values at the Vidyapeeth, don't consider yourself a 'Gandhivadi' because Gandhiji did not found any 'ism'. Wherever there is an 'ism', there is 'controversy', though there are always 'exceptions' as well.”

Gopalkrishna Gandhi said that people like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel had lived and worked very differently but had made Gandhi's values part of their lives. “That had enabled them to realise their potential and become great, he said. “You too should live your own lives rather than just be a 'Gandhivadi'. His message is 'post-modern' and that's why it is more relevant today than ever before.”

A total of 868 graduating students of Gujarat Vidyapeeth attended the 57th convocation. Out of the 868 students, 23 were awarded PhDs, 67 M Phil, 350 masters degrees, 369 bachelors degrees and 59 post-graduate diplomas.

The convocation ceremony was held on Pranjivan students' hostel campus of Gujarat Vidyapeeth. V-C of Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Sudarshan Iyangar, presented a report on various activities carried out by the institute.
