Trawler capsizes, 13 bodies found; many missing in West Bengal

'Thirteen bodies have been found and more than 50 rescued while many bodies were swept away by swift current in the river,' West Bengal Sunderbans development minister Kanti Ganguly said.

Thirteen persons drowned and many went missing as a trawler with over 150 persons on board capsized in Muriganga river at Talpatty near Sagar Islands in South 24 Parganas district today.
 
"Thirteen bodies have been found and more than 50 rescued while many bodies were swept away by swift current in the river," West Bengal sunderbans development minister Kanti Ganguly told PTI from near the accident spot.
 
Rescue operations were proving to be difficult because of the current and the movement of ships, he said.
 
Quoting police, the minister said over 150 persons were on the trawler when it capsized.
 
According to unofficial sources there were 240 persons on board, the minister said.
 
District magistrate of adjoining East Midnapore Archana Meena said marine police and coast guards with hovercraft had been sent to the spot.
 
A Defence ministry spokesman said navy divers from Eastern Naval headquarters at Visakhapatnam were rushing to the spot.
 
Three trawlers were sailing to Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas from Hijli Sarif in East Midnapore district when one of them capsized.
