The trauma of nearly 1,700 mentally challenged patients at the Maharashtra government's Regional Mental Hospital (RMH) at Yerawada was aggravated  for over 24 hours when the state power utility disconnected  power supply to the hospital due to non payment of bills.

The hospital's arrears are over Rs19 lakhs due to insufficient funds provided by the state government. The darkness caused  panic among the inmates. "We also faced a tough time in helping  patients go to the toilet," said a hospital staffer  on condition of anonymity.

The hospital's medical superintendent Manohar Yadav rushed a request letter to the MSEDCL  seeking resumption of power supply which was restored the next day. Members of the hospital staff told DNA that they had to light candles in the kitchen to cook food for the patients.

MSEDCL's executive engineer Suresh Ganeshkar, said that the power utility had sent notices at regular intervals to the hospital.   "The RMH management failed to clear the dues, “ he said.

The state health department sanctions Rs1.35 lakh once in four months to the hospital to meet its water, power and telephone bills. Hospital officials said that the amount is insufficient to meet the expenses  as the monthly power bill amounts to about Rs 7 lakh.
The RMH management has requested the health department to increase the allocation. The department has assured to increase the grants from August this year.
