A senior citizen was crushed to death by a speeding trailer on the Sanand-Ahmedabad Highway on Wednesday morning. Several trucks coming from the city on the highway were left stranded as the local crowd went berserk and blocked the road.

Bhailalbhai Thakkar, a resident of Sanand, became the victim of the speeding vehicle at 10:30 am.

The angry mob tried to set the trailer ablaze but the police intervened in time.

A complaint against the trailer’s driver has been lodged.
The traffic was brought back to normal only after the demand of the agitating crowd to build a speed breaker on the road was met. The Public Works Department did the job at the accident spot.

“Trucks passing on this highway often speed, which is why people get killed on the road. For the past one and a half month, such incidents are taking place,” a local resident told DNA.

“It is a residential locality, but the trucks on the way to Kutch pass from here. These vehicles have created chaos around the Sanand town road,” Manubhai Barot, a local leader, told DNA.

Sanand town is being developed for the last few years.

However, heavily loaded trucks passing from this main highway day in day out have created problems for the local residents. “Even though there are speed breakers, some truck drivers don’t bother to slow down,” he said.
