You better not whiz past a traffic cop without wearing a helmet. For as part of its campaign to nab traffic violators, the department has handed cameras to 40 traffic police personnel posted at important traffic junctions in the city. The personnel will take photographs of the vehicles of the violators and later they will be booked under the appropriate sections.

Talking to DNA, DCP (traffic) MM Anarwala said, "The campaign to nab traffic violators is on. We have already given cameras to police personnel to take photographs of traffic violators." Sources said that the idea to take photographs is to use them as evidence against these violators.

"The photographs taken by the department also includes those who have incorrect number plates placed on their vehicle," said the source. Traffic department officials said that the initiative is aimed at checking any kind of irregularities and to discourage traffic violators.

The department has also registered numerous offences during the month of October. This is because of its campaigns which includes the 'No tolerance zone' on CG Road and others.

In fact, the total number of traffic violations registered with the department stands at a whopping 63,473 cases between October 1 and October 18 this year. The department has also collected a lot of money by way of fines levied on these traffic violators.

The number of accidents and deaths has also seen a decline this year compared to last year. While a total of 263 deaths were recorded in 2008, more than 160 deaths were recorded in 2009. The number of offences registered in 2008 was 2519, for 2009 it was 1300.
