Traders on Wednesday raised various issues about professional tax and property tax during an open-house organised by Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), in association Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). They expressed their disappointment over the way the civic body is squandering public money.

Irregularities in property tax bills were highlighted by traders in the meet. In some cases, AMC has issued two bills for the same property while they issued one for a property that doesn't even exist. One of the traders also pointed out that though his firm is shut, he still receives professional tax bills from the civic body. Traders also demanded abolishment of double property tax on rented properties.

Meanwhile, refunds continued to be an issue much harked upon. "The official denied refunds saying that the corporation does not have money to do so," said a trader.

Kirit Patel of Vatva Industrial Estate raised the issue of drainage connection. As per directions of the central and state government, the industrial estate has internal drainage network but AMC, for more than two years now, has not provided a drainage connection.

Similarly, some of the buildings, which were constructed 10 years ago, are yet to receive building usage (BU) permission, said aggrieved merchants at the meet. They are willing to obtain permission but the process is lengthy and expensive. Civic body should come up with a simplified process, said a trader.

Businessmen are also disappointed that they do not receive proper civic services, though they pay their taxes regularly. Citing an example of how AMC wastes people's money, a trader said that civic body has dug up a recently resurfaced road behind Rajpath Club for laying drainage pipes.

"If the AMC had planned its work well, they could have first laid the pipes and then resurfaced the road," said the trader.

Municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra has assured to solve these problems soon.
