A day after an onlooker was shot dead during a broad daylight robbery in Sadar Bazar area, traders today sought police to ensure security to the business community.

In a representation to the Delhi police commissioner, traders under the banner of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) expressed deep concern over the repeated incidents in the city, and urged authorities to be more active to curb such incidents.

"Continuous occurring of such incidents is a depiction of the courage of anti-social elements, which needs to be curbed in order to restore the confidence of people and the business community in particular," said CAIT secretary Praveen Khandelwal in a press release.

Meanwhile, the leader of opposition in Delhi assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra demanded resignation of Union home minister P Chidambaram, terming the law and order situation in the state as 'deteriorating'.

"Delhi has been facing a spate of killings, dacoity, kidnapping, rape, thefts and chain-snatching incidents, which have shaken the confidence of the people over time, but in the last few weeks incidents of dacoity and murder in open public have terrorised Delhiites...," Malhotra said in a release.

"Central government does not take effective steps to wipe out these criminal gangs in the shortest possible time," Malhotra said, alleging that gangs operate with the knowledge of police.

Yesterday, two traders, who were on a cycle rickshaw and carrying Rs50,000, were attacked by two men with country-made guns.

When the traders resisted, and some passerby came to their rescue, the assailants had fired shots in the air to scare people. One bullet hit 40-year-old Nilesh Jain when he had stepped out in his balcony after hearing the commotion.
