Top official ordered Warren Anderson's release, says ex-district collector

Moti Singh, the district collector of Bhopal when the gas tragedy took place, told a TV channel today that a top state government official had ordered him and the police chief to let Union Carbide Corporation chairman and CEO Warren Anderson go.

Singh told CNN-IBN that Brahm Swaroop, the then chief secretary of Madhya Pradesh, called him and the superintendent of police and asked them to release Anderson, who was under arrest.

Anderson was arrested a few days after the gas leak, which has taken a toll of almost 25,000 lives. He was released on bail of Rs25,000 on December 7, 1984, and immediately left the country, never to return.
