The state government is holding a statewide general knowledge test on cows for the first time on September 30. Known as 'Bharatiya Gau-Vigyan Pariksha', the examination is a joint venture between Bharatiya Gau-Vigyan Pariksha Samiti of Rajasthan and the 'Gau Seva Aayog' of the Gujarat government. The test will be a regular practice in the state from now.

Dr Vallabh Kathiria, Chairman of Gau Seva Aayog, said: "As our mission is to increase awareness and knowledge about cows and the benefits and importance of cows in our social structure, this test is being organised for the first time in the state. Even though we could not publicise the examination much due to time constraint this year, still more than 26,000 students have registered for the test and will be appearing for it. Our target is to encourage as many as one lakh students to appear in the examination from across the state."

The test will be based on a small booklet containing general knowledge on cows and their importance to Indian culture. The Cow Service Commission will give away prizes of more than one lakh rupees to the first 303 candidates.

"Our idea is to sensitise the youth and students about cows, which is economically viable today. It is known as 'Kaamdhenu' (which fulfils all the needs) in Indian culture. It is scientifically proven that cow milk is very rich in nutrition. Its urine and the cow-dung are very useful as bio-fertilisers and bio-pesticides. Now we want to let young generation know and understand the importance of cows," said Dr Kathiria.
