Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) today urged the Tamil Nadu government to intensify checks on illegal transport of cows from the state to slaughter houses in Kerala and take stringent action against those involved.
In a memorandum submitted to chief minister MKarunanidhi, copies of which have been given to the district collector, Dr P Umanath and West Zone IG, Pramod Kumar, HMK alleged that hundreds of cows were being taken to Kerala, particularly from Coimbatore and Pollachi areas.
The cows were packed tightly in vans, leading to physical harm to the animals, HMK said, adding that they were transported to Kerala in this condition.
It requested the collector and IG to take steps to maintain vigil, as done in the case of sand, rectified spirit and PDS rice, on district borders and take deterrent action against those involved in smuggling of cows.
HMK suggested that the administration also strengthen the department, which was working to protect animals from cruelty.
