A fragile peace was broken on the Line of Control on Tuesday when Pakistani forces shelled the Churnda village in the Uri sector leaving three people dead. Pakistani army used 82 mm heavy mortar shells to pound the village creating a fear psychosis among the people living in the villages along the LoC in Uri.

The fresh ceasefire violation started at 10.30 am when Pakistani troops used heavy caliber weapons to target civilian houses in Churunda village. While two civilians Mohammad Liaquat, 15, Mohammad Shafiq 32 died in the shelling, the third victim Shaheena 20, died of a shock. In fact Pakistani troops has been constantly resorting to unprovoked firing on the LoC in Uri sector since October 3 but the Indian army had not been retaliating fearing casualties of the innocent civilians living in the villages.

The army has decided to take up the issue with the Pakistani counterparts to warn their troops against any escalation on the line of control. “The issue is being taken up on hotline with the Pakistani counterparts to warn their troops not to resort to firing at the villages in future”, said the spokesman.

It may be noted that Pakistan has carried out 154 ceasefire violations along the LoC and since 2009.
