Three people were killed and many others were reportedly injured as dust storm and rains hit south Gujarat region on Sunday evening. Due to uprooting of trees and hoardings in Bharuch and Narmada districts, trains on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route were running behind schedule.

After a hot and humid noon, the region experienced strong winds and dust storm followed by heavy downpour. The flood control room in Bharuch said that the district and the town received one inch rain in half an hour, beginning from 4:00pm. Rains were reported in Surat and Navsari districts also

Fatama Banga of Sansrod village of Bharuch district was killed when a wall of Chavaj railway station collapsed on her during the rain. She was passing by the wall when it gave in. Her son Idish Banga was also injured in the incident, sources said. An 18-year-old boy was reportedly killed in Ankleshwar in a similar incident, while one Dixit Bhandari, 18, of Devsar village in Gandevi taluka of Navsari struck by lightning and died on the spot, police said.

The heavy showers and gusty winds uprooted scores of trees, hoardings and banners disrupting rail and road traffic in the region. Sources said a huge hording was flung on an overhead electric line at Bharuch station and the power supply had to be stopped for 10 minutes. This delayed trains on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai routes by 20 to 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, Surat also experienced high velocity winds and rains.  There were reports of water-logging in many low lying areas of the city. More showers were recorded late in the evening but there were no reports of any casualty in the district.

Strong winds with occasional sand storms were reported from many other parts of central and north Gujarat regions, including Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Godhra and Dahod.

According to Indian meteorological department (IMD) office, strong winds were the result of the persistence of upper air cyclonic circulation over east central Arabian Sea adjoining south Gujarat region.
