An alleged small-time bootlegger opened fire at the police and a neighbour, injuring the latter, after they had come to resolve a minor domestic tiff late on Saturday evening. The man has been arrested and booked for attempt to murder.

Cops said that the alleged bootlegger, Gabha Kantibhai Chunara, 40, who lives in Makarba Gaam near Sarkhej, fired about five rounds of bullets from a country-made 7.65-bore pistol. They also seized 13 cartridges from Chunara, who reportedly holds no license for the gun.

According to Sarkhej police inspector NS Malek, the accused was going through a family dispute. Malek said Chunara's
wife called up Sarkhej police on Saturday evening claiming that her husband had shut himself inside his house and was not letting her and their son in.

Malek said that two policemen were sent to the house while a neighbour, Bharat Bharwad, also joined them. He said that despite several requests, Chunara did not open the door. Cops said that when Bharwad told Chunara that police were looking for him, he opened fire from inside the house.

"Chunara fired five rounds and one of the bullets hit Bharwad's right shoulder. Bharwad was admitted to a hospital and is out of danger now. We have arrested Chunara and booked him on charges of attempt to murder," Malek said.

Police officials added that the bootlegger was reportedly thrashed by his wife and son over some minor family dispute moments before the incident. It irked Chunara so much that he locked himself inside.
