The security of Rajpath club has been breached yet again. Within two weeks, thieves managed to cross the guarded walls of Rajpath club on SG highway twice and steal valuables of guests in the night.

On Wednesday night, a thief stole a purse of one Rajiv Mehta, 49, who was staying in suite no. 202 of Rajpath club. Mehta, who works as the managing director of a machinery manufacturing firm, was asleep when the theft took place.

Mehta is a resident of Worli in Mumbai. He had visited Halol in Vadodara for some business-related work. On Wednesday evening, Mehta came to Ahmedabad and checked in at Rajpath club for the night.

According to his complaint to Vastrapur police, he had booked suite no 202 near the swimming pool. He went to bed at around 9:30pm. When he woke up at 5am on Thursday, he learned that someone had stolen his purse kept on the table. The purse had Rs8,000 cash and credit cards among other important things.

After learning about the incident, Vastrapur police rushed to the spot and started their investigation. They concluded that the thief must have first entered the premises by jumping over the main wall from the back side at night.

Then, he removed the aluminum grill of the ventilation fan of Mehta’s suite and removed the fan as well. Through that space, he entered in the room and stolen the purse. To ensure a safe exit, the thief even cut off the intercom telephone cable. During investigation, police checked the CCTV footage. Unfortunately, the cameras could not capture any movement due to the angle at which they were positioned.

Earlier too, the club was in news for a similar incident. Two weeks back, an NRI family had checked in at the club. The family was targeted by thieves at night. It was learned that thieves stole a bag containing jewellery worth Rs1 lakh. According to the police, the thieves had extended a long stick inside the room through the window and pulled the bag. However, in that case the family did not lodge a complaint.

While police officials say that the club has enough guards manning the gates, the internal security needs to be strengthened. They are also of the opinion that the coverage of CCTV cameras should be increased and the area should be well lit.
