It seems it's time to bid goodbye to the days when the more experienced keepers of the law were all veritable 'senior citizens'. If the latest word from the department is to be believed, police inspectors will soon signify younger men in the age group of 32 to 37, promoted to the post within just eight to nine years of joining the police force.

As many as 150 police sub-inspectors have been promoted as police inspectors in the last three years, of whom around 80 were promoted after just eight to nine years of duty. "This is rather uncommon, but is being carried out as there are many vacancies at the PI level," a recently-promoted police inspector told DNA on condition of anonymity.

The PI further said that the 2002 batch of police sub-inspectors has benefited the most from these promotions. As many as 65 PSIs of the 2002 batch have already been promoted as PIs. The PSIs with departmental inquiries and those below the required level of performance are the only ones left without promotions.

"There was no recruitment at the PSI level in the police department since 2002. However, there were a lot of vacancies at the PI and deputy superintendent level that needed to be filled," a senior cop said. Many PIs retired or were promoted to DySP posts, as a result of which, there were vacancies at the PI level. This prompted the government to give quick promotions.

"It has never happened before in the history of the Gujarat police that such a large number of young men may have been promoted as police inspectors in a span of merely eight years," retired police inspector Rasik Raval told DNA.

The police inspectors of 1998 batch were the first one to get the benefit of quick promotion, however, they were promoted after the duration of 15 years of their duty as PSIs.
