Anna Hazare is the messiah for people of Bundelkhand who are fighting for survival due to extreme poverty caused by drought and apathy of administrative and political masters. The man who launched a campaign against corruption is the only hope for these people who are victims of corruption at a mass level.

With the benefits of the special Bundelkhand package announced by the Centre barely reaching the target population, people here feel Anna has answers to their problems. “Anna has awakened people. There is a feeling among people that Rahul Gandhi, who is now blaming Mayawati for failure of the package, should himself have monitored it. Neither Rahul nor any other politician is trustworthy. We have faith only in Anna now. Only he can bail us out from this situation of abject poverty and corruption,” said Sharda of Jamalpur village in Lalitpur area.

There are also allegations that the monitoring committees set up by the Centre for the Bundelkhand package is full of Congress party’s own people. “They too are a part of corruption; they take money from erring engineers and do not report the matter to the higher-ups,” said Rajender Kumar of Charkhari.
Thousands of people from Bundelkhand reached Delhi to participate in Anna’s Jan Andolans. “Trains were packed with local people who traveled to Delhi for the meetings,” said Sunil Kumar of Asuapur village near Jhansi.

Team Anna has been campaigning in UP asking people not to back vote for candidates who make false promises. Team Anna’s call is having an impact as people are keen to vote for cleaner candidates.

Hence, while bigwigs like Guddu Raja (SP), Bhagat Raja Bundela (Congress), Ramesh khushwaha (BSP) and Ram Ratan Khushwaha (BJP) are in the fray in Lalitpur, locals say independent candidate Tilak Yadav has an edge. “He has worked with people and has a lot of goodwill. The area has about 34,000 Yadavs who traditionally vote for the SP. But now they are shifting towards Tilak Yadav as the mood is to support those who stand for people,” a Lalitpur resident said.

However, some people, particularly Muslims, view Anna’s movement with suspicion and see him as a BJP agent. “Anna ke upar RSS ka haath hai (Anna has RSS’s blessings),” said Arif Ahmad Khan of Charkhari.
