After Bangkok and Macau, Turkey and Greece are emerging as the most preferred wedding destinations. Turkey, especially, presents a good mix of Asia and Europe, and is also one of the most preferred locations for shooting Bollywood films.

Turkey provides European location in Asian price, said Saurabh Agrawal, managing director of Red Events India Pvt Ltd. The company has so far organised weddings at around 500 destinations in the country as well as abroad, and is going to organise another one in Turkey in February next year.

The choice of wedding destination depends on budget, number of guests, season and personal preferences, said Agrawal.

The firm expects around 25,000 footfalls during ‘The Shadi Festival’, a three-day wedding exhibition, which will be organised from August 28-30 in the city. Around 70 exhibitors will be participating in the wedding exhibition, of which a majority are coming again with their stalls, Agrawal said. As part of its future plans, the company plans to come up with an exhibition in Vadodara in December and by next season it plans go abroad. “Our aim is to provide a platform for Gujarati exhibitors to showcase the products and services to the NRI and the NRG communities,” Agrawal said.

The upper middle class in India is growing with time and so are the opportunities for the wedding organisers. Agrawal said that people are now open to new ideas for their wedding.

The average spending of an upper middle class family has almost doubled from Rs15-20 lakh earlier to Rs30-40 lakh now. Red Events India, a Rs500 million company, is eyeing a 20% growth during the current financial year. Global meltdown did have an adverse impact on the industry since people wanted to spend less on weddings because of crisis. “Things are, however, reviving and the company is expecting to perform well this year”, said Agrawal.

Gujarat has a good potential as a tourist place and wedding destination. However, lack of good infrastructure and adequate promotion policy are the main hurdles faced by the tourism industry of the state. There is not a single resort in the state that has around 100 rooms, said Agrawal.
