Fresh tension has mounted in central Kashmir after the revered shrine of Baba Hanif-ud-Din was mysteriously gutted in a fire incident on Saturday night at Ratsuna village of Beerwa in Budgam district.

Karwan-e-Islami, the largest organisation of proponents of Sufi order, said the fire started at 11pm and within few hours it was reduced to rubble. People have demanded a thorough probe into this tragedy.  “We have registered a case and investigations have been started. The situation is normal and there is nothing to worry,” said Uttam Chand, senior superintendent of police.

This is the third incident of shrine burning since the burning of the 245-year-old Peer Dastgeer shrine in the old Srinagar city on June 25. On June 29 miscreants torched Alam Sharief and desecrated holy Quran at local Imam Bara in Gund-Hassibhat, Lawaypora in Srinagar outskirts.

“It is very tragic. This shrine was gutted in 2002 and was since then reconstructed. There seems to be a conspiracy behind such incidents,” said Moulana Ghulam Rasool Hami, chairman of Karwan-e-Islami.

J&K minister for agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir expressed grief and shock over the fire incident at Baba Hanif-ud-Din shrine and appealed for calm.  “The fire incident that gutted the Ziarat (shrine) took place in the intervening night of July 14 and 15. People of the area should not pay heed to rumors and maintain calm in this hour of sorrow,” he said.
