Tatas begin construction at Singur

MUMBAI: Tata Motors on Sunday said it has started construction of its small car plant in Singur after approval of the West Bengal government.
 
The civil construction for the plant is being initiated by Tata Motors with the consent of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation, the company said.
 
The company through its contractors and sub-contractors will deploy people from Singur for unskilled jobs, it said.
 
The plant's operation is expected to create employment in excess of 10,000 direct and indirect jobs within the plant, amongst vendors and service providers in the vicinity, it said, adding that the plant will become a catalyst for well-being of the Singur families and growth of the region.
 
Giving details of the employment, the company said it has selected individuals, on the basis of a test and interview, for an extensive six-month training.
 
Another 179 residents of Singur, selected by the WBIDC, are at being trained by the Ramakrishna Shilpa Mandir (Belur), it added.
 
Arrangements will also be made to impart relevant training to other individuals, in the WBIDC list, appropriate to their educational background and skills and based on a selection process, it added.
