Slain LTTE leader Prabhakaran’s mother Parvathi Velupillai has been granted a conditional visa to undergo treatment in Tamil Nadu (TN), chief minister M Karunanidhi told the assembly on Monday.

Making a suo motu statement under rule 110 of the assembly, Karunanidhi said the Centre’s letter on May 7 to the Indian Embassy in Malaysia stated that Parvathi could be allowed to travel to Tamil Nadu under four conditions. A copy of the letter had also been sent to Tamil Nadu government.

According to conditions laid down for her, Parvathi has to stay in a hospital, the TN government should provide the necessary assistance if she wished to take treatment in a government hospital, should not be associated with any political party or banned outfits, and should interact only with pre-notified relatives.

“During my visit to New Delhi on May 3 and 4, I had raised this issue with PM Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and home minister P Chidambaram. Based on my interactions, the Centre has granted conditional visa to Parvathi on humanitarian ground,” Karunanidhi said.

Karunanidhi said the special cell in his office had received an e-mail representation with Parvathi’s thumb impression on April 30.

She had sought permission to take treatment in Trichy. Tamil Nadu government wrote to the Union home secretary stating Parvathi could be allowed to take treatment in Tamil Nadu but on certain conditions.

Parvathi, a paralytic, was deported to Malaysia in the same flight that she arrived by immigration officials at Chennai airport on April 16 despite possessing a valid medial visa.

Karunanidhi had remarked during a debate in the assembly on the issue on April 19 that an advisory issued by the previous ADMK regime had prevented Parvathi from entering India.

Parvathi wants to be with her daughter in Canada. She had been reportedly awaiting a Canadian visa.

Meanwhile, ruling DMK’s close ally Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi on Monday requested the Tamil Nadu government to bear the entire cost of treatment of Parvathi.
