A man, who used the internet to allegedly deceive six women into marriage, and later cheated them of cash and jewellery, was arrested here today, police said.

The man was arrested following a complaint from a woman that he had married her in Tirupati recently, claiming he was an MBA graduate and was working in the US. She also claimed that she had given him 150 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs47 lakh as dowry, they said.

The woman said she became suspicious when he left Theni without informing her, following which she filed a complaint with the inspector general (south zone) on November 26.

A special police team formed to nab the man received information that he was in Kochi, and was trying to flee to North India, following which they rushed to that city. But on reaching there, they learnt he had come back to Theni.

The man was arrested as he was about to check in to a hotel here, police said, adding that four SIM cards, and a number of credit cards and debit cards were seized from him.

Meanwhile, police asked parents not to fall prey to such advertisements on the internet.
