The stage is all set for the two-phase election to the local bodies in Tamil Nadu on October 17 and 19.  After a decade, the people will again directly elect their mayors, municipal chairmen and panchayat chiefs.

Ten municipal corporations, 125 municipalities, 529 town panchayats, 12,524 village panchayats, 385 panchayat unions and 30 district panchayats in the state will go to the polls.

The fight among the parties for the local bodies will be more than curious for the people as it amounts to a referendum on the performance and public appeal of the parties — as the polls come within six months of the assembly elections. The alliances formed for the assembly election held in April have come down crashing down like a pack of cards.

The major parties such as the AIADMK, the DMK, the DMDK and the Congress are contesting on their own not to mention smaller ones like the PMK, the VCK and the Puthiya Tamilagam.

The notable development is the alliance the CPI and the CPI (M), formed with the DMDK.  Even in the Trichy West assembly by-election to be held on October 13, the AIADMK and DMK are fighting on their own.
