Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan today said that an independent institution like Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) should be asked to study the root cause of social tensions and suggest remedies to avoid incidents like dalit killings in Khairlanji in future.

Chavan had convened a meeting to discuss the Khairlanji issue and incidents of injustice meted out to scheduled caste citizens.

He said that the CBI which investigated the case of the murders of four members of a Dalit family in Khairlanji, has decided to appeal against the high court judgment of converting the death sentence of the six accused to 25 years imprisonment, in the Supreme Court.

The chief minister also stressed the need to examine how the state government can successfully put forth its stand in the apex court.

He felt the need of the hour was to understand the reasons behind atrocities on dalits and find lasting solutions.
