Syed Ali Geelani collects money for Kashmiris awarded death sentence

Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani today collected donations from traders and pedestrains at Lal Chowk here to provide legal aid to two Kashmiris awarded death sentence in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar blast case.
    
Geelani, who was set free after being detained during most part of the day yesterday, offered prayers in a mosque at Lal Chowk in the heart of the city this afternoon and later went round the business hub to collect donations.
    
He was placed under house arrest on Thursday night to foil his plan to lead a protest demonstration. However, he broke the police cordon and tried to venture out of his Hyderpora residence but police took him into preventive custody.
    
The firebrand leader recently said his amalgam would challenge a Delhi court's verdict awarding death penalty to three persons including two Kashmiris in the 1996 blast case.
    
"Discussions with the lawyers are going on with regard to Lajpat Nagar case and a writ petition is being filed in the Indian Supreme Court shortly", he had said in a statement on Wednesday.
    
On April 22, district and sessions judge of Delhi SP Garg awarded death penalty to three out of six convicted members of militant outfit, Jammu and Kashmir Islamic Front for the 1996 Lajpat nagar blast which had claimed 13 lives.
