The senior BJP leader reminded the Congress leadership of the promise made by India's first PM on carving out separate Telangana from Andhra Pradesh.
Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj today reminded the Congress leadership of the promise made by first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on carving out separate Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, if the unification experiment failed.
"Pandit Nehru ne vachan diya tha ki Telangana ka Andhra me vilaya ek prayog ke roop me hai aur agar ye asafal raha toh, Telangana ke log apna rajya alag se vapas maang sakte hain (Nehru during unification of Andhra Pradesh had promised merging of Telangana region with AP was only an experiment, and if it failed, Telangana people could reclaim the region)," Swaraj told a rally.
Addressing the public meeting organised by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) here in support of Telangana, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said she was reminding AICC president Sonia Gandhi that the Congress party and her family was bound by Nehru's promise, who was not only the prime minister, but also head of the Gandhi family.
Alleging that the Congress had been deceiving the people of Telangana for the past four decades on the issue, the BJP leader asked the Congress high command not to further delay the process of forming Telangana which was resulting in
death of innocent people including students.
Swaraj reiterated that her party has been supporting the agitation for separate Telangana and would fight till 'injustice' meted out to the region was rectified.
"Congress and TDP may speak in different tones over forming Telangana, but I reassure that the BJP's commitment is firm and we will work in getting justice to the people and the region which has been neglected for years."
Appealing to Telangana sympathisers particularly students not to end their lives, she said, "please live to watch the state being formed," predicting that Telangana state will be a reality.
She urged the pro-Telangana activists not to resort to violent acts saying it should be a peaceful movement. "Our support to Telangana does not mean opposition to Andhra," she added.
Criticising the state Congress government for not granting permission for the ABVP public meeting, the former Union minister said, "they (ABVP) had to approach the court for the permission."
She thanked the judges for upholding the fundamental rights of expression by according permission for the public meeting.
