As the nation continues to mourn the death of the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has invited suggestions from the various political outfits on amendments to rape law.

Shinde, who has written to all political parties, asked them to give suggestions to the Justice Verma panel.

The Home Minister had earlier on Saturday said that the rape laws would be made more stringent.

"Government is committed to seek deterrent punishment for all the culprits. Government is also committed to make necessary changes in the law to make it more stringent so that such incidents do not recur in future," said Shinde is his condolence message on the demise of the gang-rape victim

The Congress-led UPA Government, which is under sharp criticism from the opposition parties and the people of the country over the gang-rape incident, has set up a Commission of Inquiry to identify lapses and fix responsibility for the December 16 case and also constituted a committee of jurists for reviewing the existing laws to provide speedier justice and enhanced punishment in cases of sexual assault.

The committee - headed by former Chief Justice of India JS Verma - was constituted to look into possible amendments to criminal law so as to provide for quicker trial and enhanced punishment for those accused of 'sexual assault of extreme nature against women'.

Amid outpouring of anger and grief in the country, the gang rape victim's body was flown to New Delhi from Singapore early on Sunday morning and cremated within hours. The cremation took place under a dense cover of fog.

The girl, a physiotherapy student, was gang raped and brutally assaulted allegedly by six men in a moving bus in South Delhi on the night of December 16.
